what cause hv motor to hunt during starting?

Is the motor controlled by a VFD? I have never heard the term 'hunt' associated with motor starting. Are you saying the motor does not come up to speed in the time you expect? Some VFDs have a paramter to allow starting a motor while it is turning, on AB drives this is called 'flying start'. Without it, the drive assumes the motor is not turning and attempts to ramp up the motor speed from a stopped state. If the motor is actually turning due to inertia or external input, bad things can happen when the drive comes on. The 'flying start' option causes the drive to seek the motor speed before applying power which causes a delay, sometimes lengthy, to the starting process.

It's all okay as long as it's okay.

What do you mean by "Hunt"?
Is this a wound rotor motor?

Oscillating perhaps? What I have seen on large motors that people attempt to start with some inexpensive Reduced Voltage Solid State Starters is that their source is not stiff enough, so the starting current of that large motor causes a severe voltage drop, which then causes a loss of torque, which makes the motor stop accelerating, but not a total stall so it hovers there, oscillating until something trips. Better solid state starters will have what's called an "anti-oscillation" feature that detects this and forces the starter to compensate.

Without more information we are all guessing. If it's a solid state device of some sort, you can get up against the current limit, which will affect steady operating speed too.

Yes, it's all a guess. That's why I limited my answer to as much detail as the question had.

Hello alhafeedh,

You have asked a very vague and almost unanswerable question...

It would be much more helpful if you were to do such things as describe the type of HV motor under consideration, its duty, the nature and robustness of the power system supplying it, its starting method, and so forth. Until then, you should not expect to receive answers worthy of the name.

More information = better answers!

At lower voltages, if a fishing motor starts hunting, it should be severely chastised.

I don't even understand "it's a hv motor" High voltage motor? No, cant be. Hybrid vehicle motor? Or what?

Half full - Half empty? I don't mind. It's what in it that counts.

Every once in awhile, I catch one of my motors smoking.

I saw a motor yesterday that was not only old enough to smoke, it was so old that it would likely die of old age before it suffered smoke induced cancer. grin

Where oh where did the OP go? Scared/intimidated? Don't be; we would still like to help... Offended? That we can't help.

Perhaps he went motor hunting?

Or stopped for a smoke on the way to a fishing trip.

"That motor won't hunt."

(For the non-Americans out there, we have a common colloquial expression for an idea or proposal that will not be considered, saying "That dog won't hunt".)
