This will be a simple question for you guys on here.
I have a vent fan that is controled by a GE 30HP 480 v Frame 286T motor using a magnetic starter. I was considering slowing the speed of the fan down because too much air is moving in the room. I have a unused Allen Bradley VFD that is rated for 30hp. The question is could the VFD be used with this motor or would a inverter duty motor have to be used with the VFD.

Either that. Or you need a du/dt filter if you are running a standard motor off 480 V. Windings tend to be sensitive to PWM when you are up around 500 V.

Thanks for your reply. The information from this site is very helpful

You already have the motor.
Use it and see if it works OK, some do.
Take prudent steps to protect it as Skogsgura recommended. TCI and MTE make good products for that purpose.
Have the Inverter Duty motor at the ready if this fan is a critical operation.

Separate issue:
If that A-B VFD has been out of service for more than a year, you will need to do a PM procedure on it called "reforming" the capacitors. Search the A-B knowledge base for their recommended reforming procedures (they may spell if re-forming), otherwise there are several good ones out there that search engines can find.

If the motor is Insulation Class F and the length of the leads between the motor and the drive is 100 feet or less, you can use the drive and motor as is, without any additional lead filters.
