Motors, Delta vs Star Connection.

Something I have wondered for years. The difference between delta wound motors and star wound motors when the going gets rough. I know that both configurations work equally well on good systems. But, when the system is less than perfect; (unequal voltages, unequal phase angles, unequal voltages and unequal phase angles) does one configuration perform better than the other?

Bill, When I first saw this I was about to post a quick quip about not being able to tell the difference from outside the motor, but seeing that it was you I figured you knew that and were looking for something deeper, something I don't have to offer. There are probably off nominal conditions for which the wye will respond better and other off nominal conditions for which the delta will respond better. But in general, I'd be surprised if there were any significant difference. I wouldn't mind being surprised though.

Seems to me this was discussed in here a long time ago, maybe before you joined Bill. The thread may be gone now, I couldn't find it. A lot of threads that had certain long-gone members participating were unfortunately removed because they sunk into personal attacks.

But IIRC, there was mention by someone of Y wound motors being more fault tolerant, although I don't recall being persuaded by the argument they put forth.
