Can someone give me the run down on the benefits of upgrading? What are the new solid modeling/surfacing capabilities? Any game-changers? Is it worth it to move my team over to Creo??

I say that depends on what you would define as a game changer...a lot of functionality is improved and cleaned up but for the most part the core functionality is the same. I can say it has made a world of difference for our company in all areas. The main reason we made the switch was due to the improvements on the simulation side which I can say are game changers all the way through Creo 2.0 especially with dynamic capabilities. After switching it took only a matter weeks before our designers and detailers had moved over and to this date I don't think anyone regrets it; however, the learning curve through the ribbon and interface changes were difficult for all of us in the beginning. There are also quite a few great videos on some of the capabilities which can show the functionality if you search PTC's learning exchange.

Just a side note I am not affiliated with PTC but have been rather satisfied with the Creo change. I feel that PTC finally started toward meeting the usability and interface of SolidWorks without losing the power and capability of ProE. I have been using ProE since wildfire 3.0 and I am glad to see the menu-manager style interface being phased out and getting rid of resolve mode in 5.0 was huge. Some of the minor details have been worth it to us but again it was all about the simulation side. If you perform dynamic analyses then I say it is a no brainer.

Good luck and hope that helps,

Menu Manager Phased Out? ... Whoooh How long has it been now?[rofl]

I used to like the Switch to Legacy Mode and Back to activate all relations but with the selection tools you can easily select all then Ctrl+G to activate them. I'd like to see the Mapkey interface improved to allow for Search by command or even typing in a letter to jump to that portion of the mapkey dialog which in my opinion severely needs updating.

Pretty much Creo is pretty much the same old sh-- with a few improvements and little else.

Also are you on Support I know PTC forces that now but think Support should be offered on a per case basis so Companies that don't need to use Technical Support can save money. I know SolidWokrs and most other companies even 3dSystems Alibre allows people to upgrade their software after being off support with a simple add on fee. It would be nice if PTC did this I find that more people on this site know way more than most PTC employees no offense but seriously.

KTdesign,

You can request a 30day trial of Creo 2.0.0 [bigsmile] from PTC to evaluate the benefits and any detriments of it.
In Wildfire 5 Pro/E finally did what they should have done long ago. allowed the rotation of ellipses at any angle 90 used to be the only option without uing 4 conics with equations to control angles and other things upto WF5 I needed to use those. The new Equal Dimensions constraint and the Context sensitive constraints were stolen from the efficient SolidWorks context toolbar and are very similar to the Solidworks linked Values.

SolidWorks 2012 finally has a conic arc capability added into it's sketcher so it seems the fight is on.

You should at least request a trial version or attend a Demo at a Reseller.

The ribbon interface may be a nightmare for some I only wish it could be customized better like in CoCreate or Creo Direct. I remember the hours I spent changing my drawing selection Mapkeys single selection list to the Tab specific interface. I even created an R# mapkey sequence to activate the tabs on the Ribbon. I haven't used Creo 2 yet but look forward to checking it out.

PTC has one of the most robust "Robustest" modeling kernals Granite. SolidWorks currently uses the Parasolid Kernal by SIEMENS and may be switching to the clunky Catia Kernal [banghead] ... [hairpull]. Maybe that got better since V5 but I'm not so certain.
