I'm strapped for room in the control box for our winches. I was thinking of adding some extra features to our winches but don't have the room inside the winch-mounted control box. I know The ON-OFF buttons can't be mounted in a power cord inline box. Is there a problem with adding a fuse in the inline box? How about a current monitor and triac to shut down the winch if overloaded? And finally, how about a variable speed pot (and its zero-cross detect and triac)?

Do you want to sell this gizmo with the winches that you sell, or is it for use on winches that you own? If you want to sell it and it is on the mains wiring, then you'll need to get it UL Listed. If it is for local use and you use UL Recognized components and meet the UL design requirements (clearance, creepage, etc.) then I believe it would be acceptable. Your local authority has the final say though.

If there are any words in this response that you are unfamiliar with (other than gizmo) then don't do it.
