I will soon be moving to the Miami area from Canada and I have a quick question regarding the seismic design codes. I am just curious if the current code allows seismic forces to be analyzed using a simplified static analysis as opposed to a dynamic approach?

I do not have a copy of the ANSI manual so hopefully somebody with even a little knowledge will be able to help.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know the answer to your question nor the specific code requirements you will work to in the area, but if you are lucky enough to secure work close to your new home it might not matter much (see seismic zones per etc.) Hurricanes and tornadoes spawned from same might be another story! In any case, welcome to the USA!

Craig..

1) There are no real seismic loads in Florida, it is seismic zone zero (earthquakes, of course, would cause everyone to spill thier mojitos...
2) Simplified seismic analysis is performed for many types of structures an components across the US

3) What "ANSI manual" ?????

4) What type of engineer are you (structural, civil/mechanical or what)
