Multi Thickness Shells

say you had a block that you wanted to shell to get a box with an open top.

However, you want the wall thickness to change as you are going up towards the opening. Obviously you could jsut build extrusion on top of extrusion, but this is a more complicated situation where say the part is drafted or something like that.

Either way, how would you break up the faces of that box so that the faces could be chosen to change the shell thickness. (tried copying the surfaces and trimming them but they were not available to be chosen)

When creating a shell feature you have options for non-default thickness.

In 2001 this is an option in the Dialog box.

In WF this an option under the References tab in the Shell dashboard.

You cannot have a shell feature create a single surface with a tapered thickness as you have suggested. In this case, why not create a draft feature?

think about if you were to say the wall was going to be stepped.

the only way to do it would be to do a bunch of cuts from the top down and then draft the faces afterwards.

is there a way to basically split the surface and tell pro/e that the thickness normal to that surface is this thickness the next is this thickness etc.

or, does the multi thickness only allow you to apply it to a full face not a partial face.

You can build an Extrude (protrusion or cut) or Expand surface (in Edit->Offset) and create a Pattern.

The shell feature lets you chose one thickness per surface. There is no "one feature trick" to doing what you want to do.

Can you analyze it as a solid? That would be more accurate at the expense of solution time.
