I'm looking for a source for an inline gear reducer that would enable me to convert a quarter turn ball valve into a multi-turn version. Right angle gear operators are common for this application, but I need the inline style (Input and output shafts on the same centerline) Valves are in the NPS 1/2 - 2 size range. Ratio would be about 10:1.

Thanks,

Donf

Why don't you want to use a 1/4-turn actuator?

That said, you need to google for harmonic drive reducers, or planetary gear reducers, both of which are typically inline style. Try Boston Gear.

Hello donf,

Do a quick internet search for "planetary gear speed reducer" and you will find a long list of suppliers of what you are looking for. One of the companies I saw was Peerless-Winsmith. I only mention their name because their products are also in my Industrial supply catalog (a.k.a. Grainger catalog).

I admit I don't fully understand what you are trying to accomplish. But my first thought was how are you going to accurately stop the ball position in each quadrant? Not an issue if you are going to continuously rotate the valve without stopping.

Can you please define the torque needed from the gear reducer?

btrueblood - 1/4 turn actuator? I need a manual operator.

bcd - ..trying to accomplish? It's a long story. Let me simply say that one advantage of 1/4 turn valves is that they're quick opening - and - one disadvantage is that they're quick opening. I'm trying to address the latter concern and provide a slow opening valve. Valve stem (or operator) will have "stops" to limit ball rotation to 90 degrees and provide OPEN - CLOSED indication.

Israelkk - Valve actuation torque ranges from 100 to 500 inch-pounds.

Thanks for the recommended search string (got 6,000+ hits).

When I did a Google search with "planetary gear speed reducer" (including the quotation marks ""), I got only 56 hits.
