I work for an industrial firm and we have a multitude of finishes for our products. We identify the finishes by a 2 digit suffix.

E.g. xxxyyy-98 (White) or xxxyyy-99(Grey)

We have recently gotten a technology in which we can 'combine' the two parts to form an assembly with a unique part number xxx1yy.

Would anyone have any suggestions on how we assign the finish suffix for the assembly?

We only have 2 digits in the ERP system for finish.

I don't understand why you have to identify the finish of the assembly? You stated your new technology has already created a unique identifier for the assembly that includes the finish.

Is this due to a blank field in your ERP system that must be filled? If so, what is wrong with your 2-digit system you already have in place that everyone is already familiar with?

Sorry I should have been more elaborate.

We have in total 22 colors which we offer. Currently the new assembly we create using two different parts of the same color will be coded as xxx1yy-98 (if both part are white). But it becomes complex when one part is white and other grey or blue or red.....

The uniqueness of the assembly number is limited to the two parts coming together and not of the finish.

22 discrete colors for each piece-part, or 22 color combinations of the assembly?
