Hi,

is NX capable of converting a closed set of surfaces into a single solid volume? I'm working on NX 6.0 and Sew apparently only combines multiple sheets into a single package of sheets, but not into a solid volume.

I cannot use sheet to solids assistant, because I want a solid, closed lump and not a shell.

Thanks!

Hi,

whoops, was working in assembly mode and noticed that there was a tiny lil' gap hiding so that's why no solid for me at first. But anyway: I think the Sew tool should warn you if the outcome is not a solid. It does give you a message that a solid was created if that is the case but I feel this may not be informative enough. Particularly for Nx newbies such as myself.

if the sheets are "water tight" within the modeling distance tolerance, the result will be a "solid body", where sheets which are not "water tight" will produce a "Sheet body".

If you press "Show Result" on the dialog before OK/Apply, NX will state the result type in the cue line.

If the result is an open Sheet Body and the Show result is used, NX will display the "open edges". ( a bit difficult to see )

If the body is already sewn, you can highlight open edges under Analysis - Examine Geometry - Sheet Boundaries.

In NX there is nothing wrong with a sewn Sheet, The final result must not always be a solid body. For example, if you are about to mill an imported surface, you can do that directly on that sheet.
Then , on the other hand, it might be beneficial to add a volume to use for roughing operations , tooling, clamping etc.

Tomas
