I wonder if any of the North American readers can help me out with this?

We've blown a couple of 15.5kV fuses feeding the excitation system of one of our generators. The fuse is a British Standard type BDGNF to BS2962-1 rated 15.5kV / 16A in air. Breaking capacity is 20kA. Physically the fuse is approx. 460mm (~18") in length with offset tags for a two bolt fixing.

I can't get this type over here for 6-8 weeks, and I'm under a lot of pressure to find alternatives because the generator is out of service. Does anyone know of any US suppliers who would have stock on the shelf of a broadly equivalent fuse to US standards? I think the 'E' rated HV fuses are a broad equivalent based on my limited understanding of the US range. I guess I would need a base for this style too - the BS type is a direct bolt-in.

Any European readers who know of suppliers actually holding stock of DIN 43625 fuses and bases, or IEC 282 (IEC 60282) fuses and bases, information would also be appreciated.

I would contact S&C Electric Co. or Kearney (Fayetteville, Arkansas) and I'm sure they can supply you with fuses that will cross reference.

Hi ScottyUK,

Try contact locally in the UK Tony Warren, Cooper/Bussmann Applications Engineer.
Phone: 01509 882 699 / Fax: 01509 882 786
Alternative: Tel: +44 (0)1509 882766 or 882760
technical@bussmann.co.uk

See if the enclose catalog could help.

Good luck.

bussman have listed some fuses that meets BS spec you have mentioned..in fact visit bussman.uk site.

Thanks guys,

Should have mentioned that the original fuse is a Hawker Siddely type, and that Hawker Siddely were absorbed into Cooper-Bussmann in the last few years. Bussmann are the company quoting me 6-8 weeks delivery. It is a variant which Bussmann claim to have never made since taking over Hawker. Thank you, Brush Electrical Machines - couldn't you find anything more obscure to use?

I'll speak to S&C when they open up tomorrow unless we have some success modifying the copperwork to accept European DIN 43625 fuses overnight. We're having three couriered out of Loughbrough tonight and will see if we can safely modify our bus structure to accept them. Here's hoping...

For anyone who has low or zero stockholding of these big fuses and relies on them at their plant: they are a nightmare to get hold of at short notice: buy spares and keep the stock replenished!

Try Ferraz Shawmut Canada Inc. at tor. techservice @ ferrazshawmut. com or call 416-252-9371 There is a very good chance they have readily available DIN rated, North-American 15.5kV fuses and mounting clips on shelf.

Thanks mykh,

We got three overnight as noted on the 15th and they are in service after a bit of modification to the copper bars. Bussmann improved their delivery date to 28th of the this month for a 50% premium. In the circumstances that premium was acceptable.

Thanks all who contributed.
