I previously started a thread in which I provided a link to some manufacturing engineering freeware I had written. By doing this, I unknowingly violated the forum rules. The thread was red-flagged and removed.

I apologize for this violation. My intentions were good, but my methods were flawed.

Seems like philanthropy if the software was free and non malicious.

Is there somewhere on the site where such goodwill offers can be made?

If someone asks for such a thing, then yes, you can post your link to be helpful. If you start a thread explaining your software, that is advertising and that is not allowed. It is a very fine line, more like thick grey area, defining the two.

We in the Round Table discuss long and hard about this grey area. When in doubt, use the red flag and let management sort it out. Sometimes the red flagging a post seems over calous, but if you give an inch, the marketers will take a mile.

See FAQ731-376 for tips on how to best use Eng-Tips forums.

Oh, I also forgot about the Eng-Tips Groups. You can sponsor your own group and advertise and recruit all you want in those.
