Mysterious circles appear in Drawing

We have found out that on a lot of drawings circles appear, which do not belong there, are not inserted in the 3D model, cannot be selected AND will not disappear.

Even my colleagues abroad have reported this problem to their local suppliers (Portugal, France & Tjech Republic)

It occurred with SW2003 SP 1.0 We have tested SP 2.0, 2.1 and 3.0 this morning, but the problem is still there. The bug fix list for SP 2.1 and 3.0 does not include this SPR yet (17042)

Do more people have this problem? Please report it to your local supplier so they can solve this problem. We have this problem on our drawings, which we send to the customer. Bad situations since most of our products are cylindrical.

Have you tried doing a "Lock view focus" and or "Lock sheet focus" and see if those circles become available?

It sounds like some sketches got added to your drawings and they are associated to a particular view or sheet and the only way to get rid of them is to lock something above (Or activate) to delete the circles.

If not then I guess it's a bug....and this would be the first time I heard of it before.

When in doubt, always check the help

Yes we did, as our local SolidWorks supplier. SolidWorks also acknowledged the problem. But they did not recieve enough problems from their customers.

I have a similar problem. I imported an AutoCAD drawing into SolidWorks and saved it as a drawing template. Now every time I use that template, I get some extra line on my drawings. The lines do not show up in sheet format, but do show up in the drawing. They can not be selected and hence deleted.

Do you get this problem with all your drawings or when you use certain templates?.

If it happens on particular templates, try to recreate them and see if the problem goes away.

Good luck.

When all else fails read the manual.

Do these circles appear when you open the drawing for real or just in view mode?

Jevakil: The circles are created by a 3D part, and not by the drawing. In come occasions these circles could be detected in the 3D part as well.

Maybe your problem has got to do when you switch from activate view to sheet or vice versa. A sketch entity is linked to one of those views. If they are grey you cannot select them. Try to activate each view separately to see where the line belongs to. But you seem to have converted a sheet format from AutoCAD, and not use any drawing view. So this could be a "bug" as well.

Regg: Both. Also when you print the drawing (which is the worst problem at the moment)

I have only seen the problem you describe when the drawing is opened for view only. It seems if you crop or break a view, SolidWorks likes to show the cosmetic threads where they would be if you did not crop or break the view. Could your mysterious be cosmetic threads?

No, I am familiar with that problem. These circles seem to exist out of off-set radius of existing sketches in the 3D model. Or complete circles when only an arc is used. These lines are not affected by any feature. Ghost geometry is the best description.

It is a lack I cannot post any pictures on this forum to show you.

Do these circles only appear when you use a certain drawing format? Have you tried using the SolidWorks default drawing format to see if the circles still appear?

From what you are describing it is a graphics problem within the modeling environment not the drafting (drawing) environment.

If it is happening to different people on different systems as you have described, then it is probably a bug.

Try changing your view options. Under "Tools", "System options", "Display/Selection" there are number of choices for model display. Play with the settings and see if it makes any difference.

Good Luck.

We experienced some similar effects back in SW 2000 and to some extent in 2001. They turned out to be hardware dependent and a graphics problem. They were real sketch entites or edges but showing up in the wrong location and scale. Setting the graphic board drivers to "Solidworks" configuration (if available) and/or getting new graphics boards eventually made them go away on those systems which had the problem at various times. SW 2003 seems to be performing fine so far for us.

SolidWorks has given an SPR number to this bug (17042). This bug has been solved by SP 4.0

All other drawings and parts loaded in SW SP 4.0 lost their mysterious circles after rebuild.
