Hi everyone,

Can anyone help me with this particular problem.

Suppose you were approached by a company and asked to advise them on whether or not a change from the analogue phone system (PSTN) to N-ISDN would be worth while and if so which service, basic rate or prime rate, would be more approperiate.

if you make a choice, then write down a list of questions you would wish to ask them before making your recommendations.

Well, no doubt ISDN is a grwing technology and it provides much higher bandwidth compared to PSTN. WIth latest 56K modem technology, we can hardly achieve 28 K. Whereas through ISDN BRI 128K is available. Thus ISDN has become a cost-effective alternative for companies whose needs do not necessitate a point-to-point leased line. A number of application are being used successfully by many companies, including:

· Multiple LAN interconnection via ISDN, allowing periodic data exchanges
· Videoconferencing and file sharing applications between individuals or groups at two or more sites
· Exchange of any type of data, including CAD-CAM files, inventory status data, financial spread-sheets, images and many others
· International leased line back-up, or overflow capacity, provided at ISDN speeds from 64 to 384 Kbps
· Group 4 fax, allowing voluminous documents (20, 50, 100 pages or more) to be sent with high-definition reception
· Audio conferences with excellent sound quality to establish using broadband audio transmission
· Real-time video and audio editing with the use of ISDN-based software applications

Second thing is the use of either PRI or BRI. It dpends upon the apllication. If enterprise uses PBX, it's better to terminate PRI carrying 30 voice circuits on a single copper pair. It is also utilised in case of ISPs.
For small enterprises, BRI is sufficient especially in context of High speed internet, Intranets and VPNs.
