Name plate on vessels? 3

We have a vessel in cryogenic service at our plant. The vessel has 8" insulation. For some reason back in the 80's when it was installed, someone took the name plate off because it was going to be covered with insulation. A seach of the facility has not turned up the name plate. The vessel has a serial number engraved on it and the serial number matches the serial number on the U1A. All the drawings match, the vessel is in the same spot it was since it was built and erected. The vessel manufacturer is out of business.

We want to sell the vessel and and the missing name plate is a stickler. Is there anyway to create one? Is the name plate even required.

You always seem to have the most interesting questions and issues.

I am assuming you are refering to an ASME VIII Code pressure vessel.

The vessel certification plate serves to name and identify (specifically)the component and it's rated design. In some ways its like a "vehicle identification number" (VIN) for an automobile as well as a "dealer sticker" identifying performance limitations.

The "National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors" (1055 Crupper Avenue, Columbus, OH 43229 614.888.8320 ) should be able to help you out. I am sure that they have had this question posed to them in the past.

We had some similar problems and our AI was an immense help in getting replacement name plates. If you have a rubbing of the name plate to go with the other data will help a lot.

We had old LH2 vaporizer that had the same problem as you have until it was decided to scrap it. That's when we found the name plate buried in insulation.


just made a call and checked on the status of over 2000 pressure vessels in the inspection program. Over 80% of the vendor/fabricators are no longer in business.

to all, thanks. MJ, I know, I'm the guy that gets all the "weird stuff".

My first question was there a rubbing which was quite prevalent in the pre 90's, and they couldn't find one. My partner said he called the board and they said he had to have it. It doesn't make sense to me in this day and age, I'll bet I could buy a plate from someone off ebay in a day or two, so that name plate is as useless as $2.00 padlock on your bicycle at 2:00am in East LA.

But logic doen't cut it, its all in the paperwork.

My opinion is that you have to recalculate and make all the ndt required to atest the good conditions of the vessel through a third part notified body and then maybe you can require a new name plate according the vessel construction code.

As Christine pointed out, this aint the first lost nameplate in the world. What the link isn't entirely clear about is who provides the nameplate. If the original fabricator is still in business, they will usually provide a new nameplate for around $500, a reasonable cost when you figure that it takes them some time to dig up their records and confirm the info and then punch out the nameplate and mail it out. The nameplate can be mailed to the facility where the local AI can witness the application of the "U" stamp and the nameplate's installation on the vessel. When the original fabricator is unavailable, a generic nameplate can be made instead. Again, the local AI can take care of the witnessing.

Make sure you contact your local Jurisdiction. Do you a R or U stamp? If not you need to contact a shop who does.

Strip the insulation and look around on the vessel. There may be other ID. Take pictures/rubbings of same.
