I'm not sure if this is possible already(I can't find a way to make it work if it is) - but it would be a nice to have this feature in the future.
When in drafting and you want to dimension from a datum plane for example that is outside the boundary of the view, you either have to: expand in, figure out the layer of the feature and make it visible make your first pick for the dimension, expand back out then make the second pick, or you can expand in make the datum visible and use the name selection to pick it, expand back out, then make the second pick.
This seems like a very lengthy process - it would be nice if you could just use the name selection bar without having to expand in the view - Exactly how a cylindrical dimension works when you have the "use base line" option picked.
