Naphtha receiving problems

We are importing naphtha and despite the ship delivering the product pumping at maximum capacity, we are receiving the cargo at an extremely slow rate. There is no restriction or shore tank height issues. Can anyone offer an explanation to the slow receiving rate

How can it be possible for the ship to pump at maximum rates and, at the same time, your terminal to receive the same stuff at a slower rate? It is against the mass conservation law. The only explanation is if there is a major leak somewhere along the pipeline, or the flowmeters (either on your side or at the ship) have gone mad.

Flow in = Flow out.

How do you know the ship is pumping at the maximum rate? Is there a flow meter?

The pump may be defective or a valve may be partially closed.

Perhaps you need to engage a consultant for a ship inspection.
 
I suspect " pumping at maximum capacity" simply means the pump is operating flat out.

In the complete absence of any data, also think about whether the naptha is vapourising before it gets to the pump, i.e. you don't have enough NPSHa.

Of course a leak would do that as well...

This one though is a classic. A bit like saying I've got my foot flat on the floor of the accelerator and the car isn't going very fast. Any idea why?? Take it out of first gear maybe, repair the flat tyres, who knows what else......

Flow or pressure recycle valve on the ship pump discharge may have failed open and is recycling all of the pump's throughput back to pump suction?
 
A less dramatic cause may be that the recycle valve pressure setting is too low ? A pressure drop calc with the required flow at the corresponding tank liquid level should tell you what the recycle valve setting should be.
