Greetings,

Could I possibly lean on the vast expertise of this group to answer a hardware question. Would anyone have any idea as to the specifications for an NAS501 bolt. The only info I can come up with tells me it is non-magnetic and corrosion resistant but I can't find anything regarding tensile strengths and such.

Thanks in advance,

They (the NAS5501 bolts) are made of type 421 stainless, they have about the same strength as a 304 stainless bolt.
about 30,000 psi yield 75,000psi ultimate. Not as good as an AN bolt.

According to IHS, a NAS 501 (not a 5501) actually is 321 or 347. Some spec minimum tension strengths: 0.19" 1700 lb, 0.25" 3000 (maybe 3090) lb, 5/8 4830 (maybe 4930) lb, 3/8 7460 lb, 7/16 10100 lb, 1/2" 13600 lb, 5/8 21800 lb, 3/4 31700 lb, 7/8 43300 lb, 1.0" 57600 lb. The material UTS is stated to be 85 ksi minimum. No shear strengths are given. These spec. strengths are calculated from the 85 ksi.

So do the NAS 501's have a similar yield and ultimate to AN bolts?

See thread2-134708. Go to and enter AN3 into the Document ID slot and you can get ANs. The yield of the NAS 501 is simply undocumented, but is most unlikely to be less than 30 ksi or more than 50 ksi. The AN material looks significantly stronger. The half inch bolt is worth 18500 lb, cf. 13600 above. I'd expect AN bolts to be even higher for a yield comparison: ANs do have yield documented, and the half inch is worth 14190, implying a ratio of yield to ult for the material of 77%, much higher than the rather soggy (probably annealed) stainless properties.

N51HJ,

NAS501 is a non-magnetic cres alloy, hex head shear bolt, rated at 45 ksi(shear), suitable for applications up to 1200degF. That's all the information I have.

Since it is defined as non-magnetic, it's likely to be a 300 series cres alloy. A material with a 45ksi shear strength would also likely have a UTS slightly over 100ksi. Just my SWAG though.
