Hello all,

I'm seeking assistance with interpreting NBIC Part 3.

We have a situation involving a pressure vessel where the original nameplate needs to be removed and replaced with a new one. No other repairs will be conducted.

Paragraph 5.11 stated the If it becomes necessary to remove original stamping, the Inspector shall, subject to the approval of the Jurisdiction, witness making of a facsimile of stamping, the obliteration of old stamping, and transfer of stamping to the new item.

My questions are:
1. Is the paragraph's intent to specify that the "Inspector" mentioned will be the same one who signed the Manufacturer Data Report?

2. Can we engage the services of an ASME Authorized Inspector from the same A.I.A, even if he isn't the Inspector who signed the Manufacturer Data Report?

3. Are the rules outlined in ASME CA-1, paragraph 3.1.3 applicable here, allowing for the use of additional A.I.A's in this scenario?

4. Is it necessary to complete a repair Form in this scenario?

Why needs to be removed and replaced?

Regards

That is good question, but it is not relevant for the questions I asked.
Trust me.

I've been involved with nameplate replacements before (even stainless nameplates can become unreadable over time) and we didn't use the original AI or the original AIA. No R-1 was required, just the NB-136 form.

Thank you Christine,
Did you followed CA-1 3.1.3 when using other AIA for this job?

Apparently not. I've never heard of the ASME CA-1 standard until today.

It would be unreasonable to assume the inspector had to be the same one involved in the construction, which could have been decades earlier.
