Table A-17 of the Canadian Building Code identifies various areas for the Lintel support. My question is what is the difference between "limited attic storage and ceiling" and "Roof and ceiling only". I am in the process of redesigning two bedrooms into one (by removing an adjoining wall) and thus trying to understand the Code to determine the maximum beam span to hold up the ceiling and roof rafters.

Thank You in advance for any help you can provide.

It looks limitted attic storage and ceiling would mean something like loads for a usual room, dead load of everything loading (ceiling, partitions etc) and 40 to 100 psf live load.

Roof and ceiling for me would mean no storage nor other use than pure maintenance of anything there is allowed. Then the roof would have to sustain loads for a roof, and the ceiling in some particular way be sustained for a stable and safe behaviour, included some loads derived of maintenance, that use to specify say 20 psf general LL plus 200 lb LL in any small member at midspan or so.
