I have access to in service pressure vessels with NB numbers, or ASME Stamps, or both that have been installed over the past 40 years. I'm trying to sort and catalog these vessels to determine if further classification is needed. Can someone shed some light on what parts of what ASME sections mandate(or don't mandate for that matter) NB numbers verses ASME stamps verses both? If you have some historical knowledge of this, it would be helpful also. I'm new to this task.

Thank you.

ASME CODE STAMP is the just a stamp to assure that the vessel was built to the section specified.
U is Section VIII Div 1
U2 is Section VIII Div 2

not all vesses wil have NB number

NB National Board, as far as new vessels is required, is primarily a registration and record keeping function for U-1 or U-1a forms

Some manufactures will only register vessel with NB if it is required by user or by state.

Neither of these two stampings by themselves indicate clasifications of vessels

Each Jurisdiction has it's own rules in addtion/or exception to both the ASME or NBIC.

As vesselfab stated, the ASME stamp indicates the Code of Manufacture.

The NB number is a tool that jurisdiction's may use for registration purposes.

I suggest you contact your jurisdiction for more information regarding the requirements/history of the laws/rules particular to your location.

Attached below is a link to the National Board Synopsis which is a compilation of jurisdiction, laws, rules and regulations in a concise and easy-to-read format. It may help you understand the current requirements but will not provide a historical account. For what was required in previous years, you have to contact the jurisdiction.

There are three kinds of people in this world; those who can count and those who can't.
