NBIC Replacement Nameplate 1

Hello All,

I have an interesting situation hoping to get some insight. My company built an ASME Section VIII "U" stamped pressure vessel back in the 1980's and the user has requested a replacement nameplate. NBIC Part 2 Section 5.2.1 states the following, "All the re-stamping shall be done in accordance with the original code of construction, except as modified herein.". The problem is back in 2013 ASME changed their authorization stamp from the "U" symbol to the new "ASME" symbol (see below) and the "U" is longer able to be used, technically making it non complaint to original code. Couldn't find any interpretation on this so I'm thinking about just leaving it unstamped. Any thoughts on this?

"Original Code of Construction" just means if it was built per ASME Section VIII Div 1 you must follow ASME Section VIII DIv 1. It does not mean that you must comply with the original Edition of the Code of Construction (although this is usually permitted).

"INTERPRETATION 07-13

Subject:
The Original Code of Construction

Edition: 2007

Addendum: 2009

Question: When the NBIC references “the original code of construction”, is it required to use the original edition and addenda of that code as was referenced during the item’s original construction?

Reply: No. See Interpretation 95-19."

INTERPRETATION 95-19

Subject:
Original Code of Construction/Edition/Addenda

Edition: 1995

Question: When the NBIC references “the original code of construction,” is it required to use the edition and addenda of that code as used for construction?

Reply: No. The term “original code of construction” refers to the document itself, not the edition/addenda of the document. Repairs and alterations may be performed to the edition/addenda used for the original construction or a later edition/addenda most applicable to the work."

So I don't see any issue with using an "ASME" stamp in lieu of a "U" stamp but confirm with your AI and follow the instructions below for completing form NB-136:

Christine,

Ah... thanks for pointing that out. Sometimes I get tunnel vision on repair work and get original edition stuck in my mind.
