For the construction of a 26" OD, wall thickness .375" NGL pipeline, API 5L Gr.X52, DP=900 psig, I have specified 100% radiographic inspection for butt welds in accordance with owner's practices.
My concern is regarding branch welds. For this case, is ultrasonic examination more adequate than RT?

What construction code are you working to B31.8, Section VIII, Div 1 ? Ultrasonic examination can be substituted for RT in most codes and standards of construction. However, you will need to develop a procedure for this and you may need to establish acceptance criteria.

Thank you, metengr. since the fluid is liquid hydrocarbon, code is ASME B31.4.

You can generally use UT for both girth and branch welds. Refer to your contract specifications and see if they don't reference the testing and evaluation standards of API 1104 – "Welding of Pipelines and Related Facilities".

For ultrasonics see ASME S164 (I think that's the number)

The question should be answered by an NDT Level 3 with UT and RT main methods after a review of the branch fabrication details and the welding procedure specifications.
