NDS Table 11.5.1C shows spacing requirements between fasteners in a row. For loading perpendicular to the grain, and to allow the geometry factor C-delta to be 1.0, the table says the spacing requirement, paraphrasing here, is "spacing required by attached members." For C-delta less than 1 and for loading parallel to the grain, the spacing is given as a multiplier of the fastener diameter D.
What does "spacing required by attached members" mean? I've asked two other engineers in our office, and have looked at my timber design text, as well as the Timber Construction Manual and nobody knows and the texts don't explain either.
Thanks.
