Have a design which has an 8" x 8" x 5" deep box that has to raise 3" from full close to full open. I am looking for something like that used on audio cassette doors, only it raises straight up and down not pivot on a hinge. Does anyone know of someone who makes something like this.

You can get touch latches or touch catches from your local hardware store or furnitue shop. You can also get them from McMaster-Carr for about $4.
I am going to guess that a constant force spring (like in a lawn mower pull start)might be the best way to supply the force you need which you can also buy many places one of which is McMaster-Carr for about $7 to supply 4 lb of force. The 3" stroke is not to long a travel for a regular spring but the constant force spring would fit in a much smaller footprint.
As far as drawer rails you can get them about anywhere.
