Need chemical composition and mechanical properties of ASTM A-228. I also would like to know a good site to look up similar info on other steel. MatWeb seems to have only the mat'l sold by AK Steel.

You can learn all about the composition, mechanical properties, and more regarding this type of material by purchasing the standard from ASTM International for US$29.00.

Please see FAQ731-376 for tips on how to make the best use of Eng-Tips Fora.

A228 is music wire. A high carbon steel spring wire--mech properties vary with the diameter. Smaller diameter wire has higher mech properties. As CoryPad said, get the spec, if you plan to work with it.

I don't want to be too dogmatic about this, but if you write an ASTM spec number on a print or a PO you had better won a current copy, and have read it. When you invoke those numbers you are establishing contractual terms.
