Hi,
I need clarity on bolting. i need to bolt two plates which have holes of 20mm each. what is the bolt size i have to choose? should i consider any other parameters like tolerances, fits or screw threads? please do not delete this post considering the level of technicality involved. my doubt is only on choosing the correct bolt size for the given hole dia.please clarify. Thanks in advance.

I need clarity on what you are bolting and what the requirements are for the two parts you are bolting.

Without information, the only thing we can tell you is that your bolts need to be less than 20 mm diameter to fit through the holes.

They probably should be longer than the two material thicknesses added together, plus a margin for the washers or spacers if you need them, plus a margin (about 1/2 of the bolt diameter or so) for a margin to thread on the nuts, plus the thickness of the nut.

Hi racookpe,

This will do.thank you so much for your prompt reply.

I would choose a size that fits a 20mm hole.

[green]To the Toolmaker, your nice little cartoon drawing of your glass looks cool, but your solid model sucks. Do you want me to fix it, or are you going to take all week to get it back to me so I can get some work done?[/green]
