Need cross-reference from AISI C1008 to ASTM or other active standard 3

I have a project for which I will not be the specifier, but rather will need to match the existing material specification.
The specification is AISI C1008.
I was surpised that after internet searches and a call to AISI, it seems simply that AISI C1008 or AISI 1008 (if they turn out to be the same), are no longer in print,. with no cancellation notice referencing a new Standard.
Does anyone know where, I can find in writing a cross - reference from AISI C1008 to ASTM xxxx? I would not be surprised to see a ref to ASTM A109 or ASTM A1008.
With the ability to view the spec I could verify for myself, but AISI has no suggestion about how to view what the specification even contains. This would be for strip material.
If someone can verify a document that they know contains the information, I would be glad to go buy it.
I have searched AISI, AIST, ASTM, SAE so far. Thanks for your help.

This is a complicated subject. The following is an excerpt from the Nov 2001 revision of SAE J403 Chemical Compositions of SAE Carbon Steels:

1. Scope—In 1941, the SAE Iron and Steel Division, in collaboration with the American Iron and Steel Institute
(AISI), made a major change in the method of expressing composition ranges for the SAE steels.

...Since AISI is no longer issuing steel grade designations, grades listed in this document are SAE grades.

SAE No. 1008 (UNS G10080 in SAE J403) has the same chemical composition as the former AISI 1008. There are a number of ASTM standards that include a grade with the nominal composition limits of SAE 1008, such as ASTM A 568, ASTM A 513, etc. but there is no mention of AISI supercession. Also, there may be differences in the maximum allowable P & S levels as compared to SAE J403.

Neither ASTM A 109 nor ASTM A 1008 specifically reference grade 1008. A heat of steel that meets the composition limits of 1008 according to SAE J403 may also meet the composition requirements of ASTM A 109 and/or one of the grades within ASTM A 1008, but there is no 1008 designation in these particular ASTM standards.

AISI C1008 or 1008 is a designation for a material with a specific chemical composition range only and in itself is not a specification or standard. There is no mechanical property requirements of even product form (e.g. cold rolled, hot rolled, forging, casting). However, the most frequent form is bars and 1008 should be listed in ASTM A29.

I have since acquired SAE J403 and see that it does list the requirements as chemical composition only. Since there was a collaborative agreement between two organizations, and 1 organization has removed itself from authority, it is logical that the only documentation of the remaining partner would be sole authority over the topic.
Do you believe or have a way of knowing that AISI C1008 is the same as AISI 1008? I see the UNS G10080 does show the cross-reference you mentioned if AISI C1008 is the same as AISI 1008. People at those organizations seem to recognize they are one and the same in phone conversation, but again, have nothing in writing at this time.
I don't suppose anyone has seen original documentation, other than SAE J403, for either AISI term? I'm amazed there is no direct way (that I've found), provided by AISI or a designee to just read or even verify entire original content. Even an aged copy should exist SOMEWHERE.
I give credit to the US Military/Gov't for at least allowing that type of information sharing through ASSIST, which I recommend to anyone who might have a similar challenge with a Mil-Spec.

If you look at the date quoted by TVP, you will see that we are talking about an event from 66 years ago. Sloppy drafting/engineering/adminstration practices have allowed for the current condition where people put C1008 on a drawing or internal specification and expect that to mean something. ASSIST won't show you anything about a 66 year old decision to obsolete one of the US military's standards.

You need to move your current project forward by addressing the inadequacy of the current "requirement", or completely documenting why you are making whatever decision you make in the absence of full information.

By the way, AISI C1008 and AISI 1008 are the same, but I have no piece of paper that proves it. Also, if your part can be described fully with AISI C1008, then your part must not do much other than occupy spacetime. You should be safe using a competent supplier manufacturing a modern product.

The "C" in C1008 is a designator of the method of manufacture. The lack of a "C" implies that any method may be used. Below are the 3 manufacturing prefixes:

B - Indicates acid Bessemer carbon steel.
C - Indicates basic open-hearth carbon steel
E - Indicates electric furnace steel.

An "M" prefix is also used to designate Merchant quality bar, which has no limit on silicon content..
