Need formula for chuck griping pressure?

I am looking for a formula that will tell me what gripping force i will see on my chuck jaws if my actuater is at a set psi.

for instance if i set my chuck psi(actuator) at 500psi and put a gauge in my jaws i will read 8,000 lbs force. per jaw for combined griping force of 24,000 lbs force.

The manufacturer of the machine should be able to give you a chart of grip force with THEIR recommended chuck, which you can then correlate to another chuck manufacturer to get their grip force. All machines and chucks are different, because you have different cyclinder sizes and different actuating leverages from chuck to chuck. Just because you get 8k# force on 1 jaw does not mean you have 24k# total grip. More force also does not always mean a better grip. Jaws that are properly machined (and clean installation!) will hold better at lower pressure than ill-fitting jaws at high pressure. This is where actual practice and past experiences strip away "book" theory. Good Luck.

I would agree with you ornerynorsk. I have all of my chuck #'s and actuator #'s and manufactures. but i need to figure out if maint puts a gauge in to check grip force for tpm what it should be at any given setting.
