need motor for small wind tunnel, 0-10,000rpm, 12A, 4-8" dia, controllable. Must be able to sustain speed of fan/turbine. Have not found fan or turbine/fan to attach to motor. Motor fan combination will pull 0-9000 fpm of air thru small 5' length wind tunnel with 4" square test chamber.

Is a VF drive applicable to this? In [maybe too] simple terms, with 240Hz input, isn't a 2-pole motor good for 14,400 rpm?

Be careful running motors that far above the base speed. The mechanical forces may cause it to explode!!

Use a VFD on a spindle motor or a router motor. They are designed for high speed operation, usually up to 400Hz input. Be aware that above rated base speed, the motor goes into constant HP operation, so torque will be dropping off exponentially as speed increases. Subvert the dominant paradigm... Think first, then act!

i would have thought that most (if not all) spindle or router motors were designed to run at 50hz (or 60 if you pay for your beer in $)...running them at 400hz would have bits everywhere

Suggestion: Visit
and type Motor under Product or Service which will return many motor categories and links to their manufacturers. E.g.
