Hi all,

Im working in south america and i´ll probably be designing a residential low rise, 6 floors, steel buiding for resisting earthquake loads in a few months.
I will be "coached" by a more experienced senior engineering who will be responsible for the project. I have no prior experience in seismic design and would like, and have, to learn how to do seismic design. Unfortunatley this senior engineer won´t be available until the project begins so i can´t rely on him.

I have expecience designig "static" steel structures in the last years. All design where made to the AISC 360-10 using the DAM and ASCE 7-05/10. Could you recomend me any literature on seismic design of buildings? for reference, i can say salmon & johnson´s book is a reference on static analysis to me. Is there anything similar for seismic design? Also, i will de detailing connections. SAP2000 will be used for the FEM model.

So, if anyone may help me finding some guidance it would be great!

Thanks

Santiago!

Hi LQQD,

have tried some publications from FEMA.?
for example FEMA 440, 350, 451 are worth to see.

I think the best references are ANSI-AISC 358-05 and 341-05.

have a look.

Start with these because they are excellent and free:

This is an absolute must despite being very expensive: Link

I have each of these texts and they are all worthy:

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

Thank you very much both of you, that was really helpful!!

I'll start with some of those. I'll probably come back soon for more advice!
