neutralizing amine for high pressure steam

I am looking for a cost effective replacement for the GE Betz Dearborn product “steamate” as a neutralizing amine in a high pressure steam service. Does any one have experience using commodity chemicals of Ammonia and Morpholine as a replacement and any problems to watch for ?

How high pressure? Neutralizing amines have very few process side effects, if you use the right distribution ratio and feed locations.
 
We just switched over today (8-25-03)from amine to ammonia (19% diluted down to 5%), I'll let you know how it goes. Our high pressure system pressure varies from 1200 to 2600 pounds depending on the plant load/duct fire.
 
The steam pressure varies from 770 to 1450 pounds dependent on load and Duct fire. I am looking into a cost effective replacement for "steamate" due to high injection rates. The condensate return from the steam host is "pollished" and the amine feed is high due to this.

Neutralizing amine costs are a function of condensate return and amine recycle. Your polisher removes all amine from the condensate, so there is no recycle. A viable alternative is to regenerate your polisher with an amine, and thereby reduce your amine costs significantly, perhaps by over 75%. Alternatively, various control schemes are possible with amine feeds to minimize the overfeed of each component, resulting in minimal feedrates. As for costs, you can buy amines in the open market.
 
I am not aware of a amine based regeneration chemical for cation, anion mixed bed polishers some more information on this would be greatly appreciated. Also for an update we just went to a 1:1 mix of “steamate and Ammonia for a trial period to see how the process steam and condensate return systems will respond.

Betz calls their program REGENAMINE. The technology is very good.

You would be best served by surveying your condensate system prior to experimenting. You may get unexpected results. Amines are used in distinct ratios, based on their DR and neutralizing capability and their recycle in the steam system. In high condensate return systems, it may take days to notice the change in neutralizing amine programs.

Check the return condensate pH in various areas throughout the facility, particularly partial condensation points. There are four or five typical amines that are used in the industry, so don't limit yourself.

You have been very helpful and I am confident that we are on the right track for starting to reduce costs and maintain stability. We are also doing a amine balance test prior to any major changes.
