Makes a lot of sense to me, but I'll admit my bias ;-)

What size motor would be required to push a fully load aircraft at 15MPH?

I bet they never sell any electric system that will make a plane move 15MPH.. When they do things like replace all the seats with ones a pound lighter to save some fuel. I can't see them tossing on several hundred pounds of motor!

Perhaps they would go for 5MPH to get them to and from gates but 15MPH taxing would probably go for the engines.

I think I've seen planes back away from gates with no assistance and no engine reving. I suspect hydraulic motors using the already vast hydraulics available and a 10 pound hydraulic motor.

I had two thoughts.
The first one was along some of the lines already mentioned; A good idea but is it the best technology to move a large airplane. Wheel motors, or hydraulics perhaps.
The other thought was WOW.
This may quietly disappear or it may be the next big step after VFDs and build on the capabilities of the VFD. With a VFD, we have a system that can vary both the voltage and the frequency of a motor. With this system and VFD technology we have a system where the VFD based control can seamlessly reconnect the internal winding groups in the motor as it is running.
I think that torque will still be pretty much dependent on frame size, but with the reconnection you can stay close to the optimum frequency regardless of the speed. Just reconnect for the appropriate speed range.
It will be interesting to see if the benefits outweigh the complexity.

That picture is of the prototype. Somewhere in there it said they will be wheel motors. As to comparing to using the engines, that's exactly what they are proposing. The way I interpreted it is that although it adds weight which adds to fuel consumption, that is apparently more than made up for in not having to use fuel for taxiing.

They will still need the energy.. If they want to move the plane fast, they will need to speed the engines up to generate the power... I can see this as useful on those aircraft that have existing efficient APUs like 747's
