I recently took over as plant manager of a gas cylinder filling operation. Next year we are completely redesigning the plant, from unloading empties off the truck, to filling, to reloading onto the truck. Does anyone have any resources to recommend on the most efficient design of a compressed gas filling plant?

I think that this is an activity that would be best served by an engineering study by a consultant.

The advantage to paying an experienced firm for a study is that any type of plant layout involves tradeoffs. A consultant can point these out, and in many cases, place a financial value on alternatives.

Additionally, a consultant can point out OSHA and other layout pitfalls that can cost a lot of money to correct.

Finally, having a study in hand proves to management that you are a reasonable, responsible individual who only has the companies best interests in mind...(and it insulates you from many bad decisions that could haunt you for many yers to come !!!)

My opinion only

is the plant for LPG cylinders? Or is this another gas?

Thanks. We have an engineering dept helping us, and have all of the technical issues regarding fill manifolds, etc., worked out. I was interested more along the lines of a Lean design - placement of sort areas, fill areas, stock areas relative to each other.
Just wondering if anyone had any experience or resources in this regard.
