New nozzle on a steel storange tank 1

This is my first post on this forum, so nice to meet you all

I have a question regarding a water storange tank in use, operating at atmospheric pressure. We want to add 3 new nozzles on this equipment. Is the API 650 ruling this kind of modifications ? What would be the main points to be aware of, for example do we have to re-test the tank in pressure afterwards ?

If the tank is for process or otherwise non-potable water, API 653 is the reference you seek. Re-hydro testing is a requirement for Major Repairs or Alterations only. Major Repairs or Alterations are defined in the standard. The nozzle size is the determining factor for your alteration.

If the tank is for potable water and constructed to AWWA D100, it is more likely controlled by the contractual language between you and your client.

Thank you for your answer.

I have looked at API 653, and I understand that we just have to add a reinforcing plate around our new nozzles.

As for the testing, our nozzles would be of 12 inches. If I look at 10.3.1.2a, I only have to perform a full hydrostatic test of 24 when the modification is "the installation of any shell penetration beneath the design liquid level larger than 12 inches NPS".

So for my 12" nozzles, that would be ok right ?

12" NPS nozzles are exempt from major repair. Additionally, you may not require a reinforcement plate. It is possible that your tank will meet the requirements for integral reinforcement. Check with Section 9.8 of API 653 for specific details relating to your application.

Also, the answer changes if the shell material is a higher strength lower ductility grade.
