new part numbers in assemblies

We have decided to change our part number system and we use the same models in hundreds of different assemblies. How can we rename the parts and have the assemblies find them? We are unable to open all the assemblies that the affected part is used on. We do not have Intralink or Windchill.

Is there any way we can modify the .asm file and replace the old number with the new one? If so, what language is it in?

If we bought Intralink, does it compile it's own database so we could do it through that?

Any other suggestions?

Indeed, INTRALINK will rename parts without affecting assemblies.

Without INTRALINK will be a nightmare. If you care about the BOM, then you cabn keep the same numbering, create a parameter in each part (part_number) and modify your BOM table to look for the part number and not for the asm.mbr.name.

If you do care about the part number, then the only smart move is INTRALINK.

My advice: go for INTRALINK.

This is one of the best reasons why a Data Management system is needed for CAD.
Intralink will handle all of the relations and their updates/changes BUT you have to load all of your files in Intralink so it knows about all of the relationships.
I-cubed has a migration tool for importing data into PDMLink and Intralink 8.

First option, get Intralink.

Second option, how many parts need to be renamed? If it is only a few dozen and a handful of assemblies, not so bad. If it is much more, and used in hundreds of assemblies, get ready for work.

You can make a family table of the generic (current)part, make an instance with the new part name and do a replace in the assembly. As time goes by, you can replace all the parts with the correct intsances. But you must keep the family table alive, if you remove the family table, you wont be able to find the new named part.

Third option, get Intralink. ;-)
