New Structural Exam - NCEES

Has anyone read the most recent news thread on the NCEES website:

Most specifically:

"The results of this study will be used to determine the specifications for the exam, which is scheduled to replace the current Structural I and II PE exams by April 2011."

Has anyone heard anything about this new exam? Does this mean the Structural 1 option will be eliminated in favor of a joint SE1 & SE2 exam? What does this mean for those who have passed only the SE1?

In my area it is very common for structural engineers to take the Structural 1 exam in lieu of the Civil PE because they prefer to study material which most directly relates to their professional development. (Which I completely agree with) The SE1 is often used as a 'stepping stone' to the SE2 for younger engineers who do not have the experience or expertise to pass the SE2 yet.

It seems the new exam will eliminate this option and put more pressure on younger engineers to pass the Civil PE first or dedicate more time to studying for a more difficult SE exam.

Any thoughts?

Here is a reply to an email I sent to NCEES regarding this.

Starting in 2011, there will only be one Structural Exam, replacing the current format of two structural exams. The format of the new structural exam has yet to be fully determined, but it is proposed to be a 16-hour two-day exam. The morning session on both days will consist of multiple choice, and the afternoon sessions being essay. It is also proposed that the first day to be gravity loads, and the second day lateral.

Thanks for the reply StructuralEIT. I suppose we won't get too many specifics this early on.

I wonder if they plan to make the Civil PE a prereq for this new exam. Or if they will make those that have passed the SE1 retake the full 16 hour exam.

I was planning on taking the SE1 in lieu of the Civil PE, but after hearing this - I'm thinking it might not be the best idea. I suppose you could always take the SE1 and get your PE and then retake the new SE exam when it is released.

Any thoughts?

I would be willing to bet anyone who takes the SEI prior to 2011 will be grandfathered in. After all, it is the states that determine the licensure requirements, not NCEES.
