Hi Everyone,

I'm new to ProE & trying to figure out where I can get some answers. I've browsed around the Help area & found some answers, but perhaps, someone here can also assist:

Here's a few that I currently have:

Questions (No particular order of importance):

• Determine if views have been created on model-side & finding
associated entities
• Revising or adding onto created model-drawing views
• Bring in created desired model-drawing entities
• Controlling layers
• Using or displaying desired layers on drawing views / sheets
• Moving layers or line entities from view
• How to add revisions?
• What's Chromalloy's Revision Symbol? Currently appears to be
a letter with circle around it
• How do add views?
• Change view callouts
• Add GD & T & with stacked composite feature control frames
• Verify there are no manual dims
• Is there a symbol library?
• Add GD & T within notes (May also require stacked composite
feature control frames)
• Replace view(s) without losing already placed dims, section
callouts & other entities
• Add centerline
• "Clean up" blend unwanted blend entities

I'm primarily a NX Designer & now need to also learn ProE. I see ProE's functionalities are much different than NX, even though the capabilities are much the same.

I don't expect all of these questions answered but whatever could be answered would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi ProE Users,

I thought this was a forum to assist each other. Can someone assist me with these questions.

Thanks

First it would help if you would state what version of ProE you are using.

Next remember that in ProE you have 3 types of files .prt for a single part, .asm for assemblies and .drw for creating drawings of either parts or assemblies.

• Determine if views have been created on model-side & finding
associated entities

I do not know what your after here, please explain.

• Revising or adding onto created model-drawing views

In ProE drawing views are from the model, there is some ability to add some entities, but this is limited. You can also erase selected entities, but this is even more limited.

• Bring in created desired model-drawing entities

See previous answer.

• Controlling layers

Layer convention is a company specific topic for the most part. You can set up rules to have specific feature types, ie datums to be on a specific layer by default. Check the help.

• Using or displaying desired layers on drawing views / sheets

Again this is somewhat company specific. Layer can be hidden, un-hidden (shown) or isolated. If you are in a part model, solid geometry can’t be hidden. In an assembly model, components on a layer can be hidden. If a layer is set to isolate, any items on a layer not isolated is hidden, even if the layer is set to be shown. Also if a item is both on a layer that is hidden and on a layer that is isolated, it is visible.

• Moving layers or line entities from view

Please explain what you want to do?

• How to add revisions?

Please explain.

• What's Chromalloy's Revision Symbol? Currently appears to be
a letter with circle around it

You need to ask your company, this is company specific.

• How do add views?

Are you referring to drawings or named views in a model?

• Change view callouts

Please explain

• Add GD & T & with stacked composite feature control frames

In WF3, in the GDT creation dialog box in the Datums Tab, there is a composite tolerance directly below the primary, secondary and tertiary selection area. This would give you a tolerance with one geometric characteristic. To get a double line GDT, create your first line and place it. Then create your second line and place it using the other gtol option to the first.

• Verify there are no manual dims

This could be done using Model Check (similar to NX’s CheckMate).

• Is there a symbol library?

Yes, check with your company this is company specific. Also check the pro_symbol_dir value in your config.

• Add GD & T within notes (May also require stacked composite
feature control frames)

A GDT tolerance can be included in a note by typing &g3 where the 3 is the id of the GDT tolerance.

• Replace view(s) without losing already placed dims, section
callouts & other entities

• Add centerline

In ProE, axies or centerlines are shown. Use the Show/Erase dialog box.

• "Clean up" blend unwanted blend entities

Please explain.

Having used UG/NX since V3 in 1987 and Pro/E since 2000i2 in 2000, there are a lot of similarities yet diffferences in the 2 programs. Functionality wise, they can create a solid model of what you want. Interface wise, they are vastly different. From a workflow point, you do need to change your thinking as to how to do things in one program vs the other.

Pro/E does a poor job of utilizing 2D geometric entities to define your part, outside sketcher, or help define your views. It wants to use the 3D solid model for everything. NX would allow more 2D entity creation.

Layers in Pro/E can be set in advance to automatically put entity types on specific layers. You can also have the same entity referenced on multiple layers. From this you can see that layers have a different context than they do in NX. I seldom use layers in Pro/E where I used them a lot in NX.

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback. I am using WF 4.0

I see that ProE seems to want everything done on the model side, then somehow brought in drafting side. I did this to create a couple of primary section callouts & have the section views. Now, I'm trying to figure out on how to dimension these sections, which were not fully defined in the sketcher - Because it didn't need to be or sections are not the same used to create the actual model.

With NX, we are able to "clean up" views by expanding into review, hiding any unwanted blend edges. Is this possible in ProE Drafting?

My primary concern is to get necessary section views, details or general views laid out & dimensioned as necessary, along with necessary datum callouts.

Are there any good sources to see how this is done or can someone explain?

Thanks

First I will refer you to a different web site: you may be able to find useful information there. Also you should google Pro/engineer tutorial, I just did and there appear to be a lot of them.

"Cleaning up" by hiding any unwanted blends (rounds in Pro/E) can be done by using simplified reps. Check and make sure if this is possible with drawings of models as opposed to assemblies (I do not recall when that became available).

You can use the show/erase feature to show your dimensions, centerlines, datums etc from the model. When doing drawings, I usually wait until I have shown all dimensions, even those I will not be using, before I start to create any that are needed to create a fully dimensioned drawing. You will find there is a difference of opinion on using shown vrs created dimensions, I prefer shown for part drawings and created for features of parts that must be shown on an assembly drawing.

Hi PeterStock & Others,

Thank for the info. Keep the info. or work instructions coming.

Perhaps, I don't know ProE well enough, but from what I see of the drafting sides, it's application is a pain quite cumbersome to use.

A lot of people complain about Pro/E's drafting package and 2D geometry tools outside of the sketcher.

Hi Everyone,

I can now see why Designers complain about ProE Drafting application & why the company work for has simplistic drawings.

Perhaps being primarily a NX user, I find its functionalities more straight forward for both modeling & drafting.

ProE modeling side doesn't seem too bad, even though it takes more clicks to do the same thing in NX.

Here's my scenario now. I created a section callout in ProE & put onto the drawing. My primary datums were showing, but now lost one of them, moving the view around. How can I get this back?

I don't think I have the layer off either because other datums are showing, which should be on the same layer.

Thanks
