I'm interested but only playing at the moment. Does anyone know why after I load an IGES assy, it won't let me pick the bolts to add a preload. It shades the shank in half a surface as if it is not a solid, yet it was modelled as a solid by revolving.

Is the bolt a solid or a surface? Check it. You've probably imported it as a surface.

Thanks for the reply, but in SW it says they are all solids and I just saved it as a IGES file. Then imported that to ANSYS. How do I check in ANSYS whether it has picked it up as solid.
Would it matter if the bolt head and nut faces were either a few thou off or under the mating surface.
I used a bolt length that I got from measuring between faces to 4 decimal places?
Thanks

The export options in SW allow you to export as a SOLID, SURFACE or WIREFRAME, so make sure you select the solid option (by default I think it is surface export only). Then when you import to ANSYS, make sure you select solids to import (which it should by default anyway). SW is the key here.
