I posted this under structural, and it was suggested I post it here also:

NFPA 13 has section 9.2.1.3 Building Structure, which requires a 250 lb live load requirement at the point of hanging, intended to account for a person's weight at that point. Unless I'm just missing it, I see no similar section in the NFPA 13D low-rise residential code and I'm having trouble locating anything that kicks back to the main NFPA 13 for structural design requirements.

What, if anything, requires the 250 lb live load in low-rise residential structures?

No live load provisions are prescribed for water filled fire protection piping in the 2012 International Residential Code or NFPA 13D. Given the amount of water in these systems and the materials of construction (CPVC or Cu tubing), the added weight of water filled pipe has been found to be neglible and doesn't create any safety issues based on the IRCs prescriptive construction requirements.

The first answer was based on the requirements in NFPA 13D for one-and two-family dwellings and townhomes constructed to the IRC. The design of an automatic sprinkler system for multi-family housing that is not classified as a high-rise building is generally governed by NFPA 13R. In the case of a NFPA 13R system, Section 6.13 requires pipe hanging and bracing systems comply with NFPA 13. Multi-family housing is subject to the requirements of the International Building Code.

Thank you. To confirm I understand your reply correctly:

For one and two story dwellings/townhomes governed by NFPA 13D, there is no 250 pound live load requirement at the point of hanging.

But for low-rise multifamily governed by NFPA 13R, Section 6.13 requires compliance with NFPA 13 in this regard, so the 250 pound live load IS required.

Correct?

Correct. Based on NFPA 13R Section 6.13, the specified live load requirement is applicable. NFPA 13R references NFPA 13 Chapter 9 in its entirety.
