Please, please help me here…I have a combined sprinkler/standpipe system with a 6” looped main located in the first floor and risers located in the staircases. The standpipe is a Class III system ,the first floor has exposed ceiling and it is a 4 storeys building. NFPA 14 Article 6.1.2.2. states that “Standpipes and lateral piping supplied by standpipes shall be located in enclosed exit stairways or shall be protected by a degree of fire resistance equal to that required for enclosed exit stairways in the building in which they are located”. My question is : do I have to enclose the 6” loop main on the ground floor in an fire rated enclosure? Our building code asks only for the standpipe risers to be located in an exit stair shaft or a service shaft and nothing else. Thank you

Reading NFPA 14 6.1.2 shows that "Lateral" piping is any piping connecting the standpipe to hose connections. As you've stated the building will have a sprinkler system, so NFPA 14 6.1.2.2.1 applies:

In buildings equipped with an approved automatic sprinkler system, lateral piping to 2.5 in. (65 mm) hose connections shall not be required to be protected.

And 6.1.2.2.2 also applies:

Piping connecting standpipes to 1.5 in. (40 mm) hose connections shall not be required to be protected.

The only thing that would need to be protected to section 6.1.2 other than the standpipe is any piping to a hose connection over 2.5 inches - which means your 6" loop main doesn't need to be protected to this section's requirements.
