NFPA 20 and UL listed

Hi Guys,

Can someone help me with this, i was asked to quote for a motor to NFPA 20 and UL listed. The UL bit is no problem but the NFPA20 is not something i have come across here in euroland. Can somebody help me on this, i dont think our IEC motor will comply as a Google search lets me know it is a US spec but i cannot find much detail. Getting info on Nema motors here is difficult, i did look up the SIEMENS US site and they have a GENERAL PURPOSE GP10 / RGZP CAST IRON Motor but i do not know if it complies with this spec.

national fire protection agency 20 . all i can tell you is for pumps , fire pump installations. and if there is anything else to it i am not sure.

NFPA 20 is very specific to "Fire Pumps", a product definition that requires very specific installation, approval and inspection procedures. If you are in the business of making Fire Pumps and want to sell in the US, your products must meet all of the requirements spelled out in NFPA 20. But NFPA is not a testing authority, it is a standard. UL is a testing authority and in general, UL's standards for Fire Pumps will take the NFPA 20 requirements into account. What you, as the manufacturer, must do is to ensure that the way in which you build your Fire Pump will not result in the INSTALLING CONTRACTOR being in violation of NFPA 20.

If you are not already in the business of making Fire Pumps and got into some project where someone is saying they need to be, I suggest re-evaluation your willingness to take this on. It s a very highly specialized field.

At the moment, only five (5) manufacturers in the world make UL listed fire pump motors. While two (2) of them aren't US domestic manufacturers, they aren't European either.

On the other hand, NFPA 20 can be reviewed for free at NFPA's Codes & Standards website:
