NFPA 30 Fuel Dispensing area - extract fan to be spark resistant? 1

Hello

I am working on a simple extract system for a diesel fuel dispensing area.

NFPA 30 guides the required extract CFM from the room to control the vapour concentration to max. 25% of the lower flammability limit (LFL).

I see no stipulation that spark resistant extract fans are required (including in the related NFPA 91).

What is the consensus on whether spark resistant extract fans are required? The reason I ask is that there are numerous NFPAs that cover battery room hydrogen gas extract (same principles regarding keeping the concentration less than 25% LFL), and although spark resistant construction is not mentioned (as far as I can see), I have seen it specified numerous times.

Thank you

See NFPA 30 Clause 6.4.

Explosion protection design to be adopted as required after hazard analysis.

Diesel is combustible, not flammable, as long as max normal room temp / diesel container temp is < 55-60degC.
On the other hand, you may wish to ventilate the room from a HSE perspective to keep aromatics ( BTEX) concentrations with limits permitted by local authorities
