NFPA 820: Fire Alarm Systems vs Fire Detection Systems

I'm designing a facility that involves an aerated static pile composting process within an enclosed building. NFPA 820 (2012) Table 6.2(a) line 24 requires a fire detection system, but I can't find a definition of a fire detection system that's distinct from a fire alarm system. NFPA 72 doesn't define fire detection system. From what I can tell, initiating devices (detectors) are defined, but no guidance is given to the type of detectors that would be required in this space.

Is there even any point to a fire detection system that doesn't include an alarm component?

yes if fire detection is required in a commercial setting you will have a fire alarm system.

As far as what type of detection, it depends on the atmosphere and the application.

heat detectors such as in pre-action systems could be one type of detection outside of fire alarm (smoke detection)
