I am trying to figure out if NFPA 85C or 86 would be the correct one to use. We build single and multiple burner gas fired indirect heaters that are naturally aspirated.

Thanks,

Darren

Darren,

I'm sure by now you have found the answer to your question but I'll see if I can help in the event you haven't. NFPA 85C was replaced in 1999 with NFPA 8502 which in 2001 was incorporated into NFPA 85. NFPA 85 applies only to Boilers and Heaters (heaters of water and other fluids) with Btu output of 12,500,000 or greater. NFPA 86 applies to Class A and Class B Ovens and Furnaces that heat a process. Now I don't have much information on the units that you produce but I'm guessing they don't meet either of these descriptions.

Good Luck,
Mike

Mike,

Some of our clients ask us to conform to NFPA 85 or 86. I have since uncovered what you have mentioned above. Reguardless most of our heaters are less than the 12.5MM Btu minimum. What we have adopted is using the fuel train guidlines. I have talked to several of our clients and that is what they wanted was an FM approved package but they typically know little about combustion. Thanks for the information and replying.
