NFPA2001 GAS SUPPRESSION SYSTEM

Hello. I've got a question here. In accordance with the NFPA requirements, is it necessary for a gas fire extinguishing system to be furnished with a manual/automatic switching device? And does the sole manual release (Electrical Manual Release and Mechanical Manual Release)method fulfill the NFPA requirements?

Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Hi. A manual only activation can be used, but only if approved by the authority, otherwise the system must have automatic and manual activation.

Thank you very much for your reply. My owner has installed a set of FM200 in the control room. Since there are always people in the control room, they are worried that the automatic spraying might harm the personnel. Therefore, they want to install a manual/automatic switching device. As far as I know, it seems that no project has ever done this before.

I take this is not in the USA?

What is the “” manual/automatic switching device “”” supposed to do??

There is a reason for the question

The owner, a Turkish man, hopes that when there are people working in the protected area, the gas fire - extinguishing system can be switched to the manual mode via the manual - automatic switching device. This measure is to ensure that the gas fire - extinguishing system won't malfunction while there are individuals present in the area.

The systems I have seen ,,,

1. Automatically dump upon detection

2. By manual pull station

The only interrupt I have seen is

1. A manual abort, which is a dead man switch. Someone has to stand there and hold it. Once released the count down continues.

2. Keyed switches, to override the system during maintenance,

I would not approve what the owner wants to do

It defeats the automatic dump

It relies on human intervention

It might not get set back to normal at the end of the day.

Depending on how a system is set up,,,, most have a Pre Alarm stage,,, this is to alert people to get out..

About how many square feet is this protected area????

The protected zone is rather diminutive, merely covering an area of approximately 20 square meters. The property owner has come up with a host of peculiar inquiries. Notably, he intends to install a combined FM200 system, which functions in a manner akin to the IG541 system. That is to say, with the employment of a selector valve, a single such system will be capable of safeguarding multiple protected zones.

Thank you very much for your reply.

I think you can include a maintenance keyed switch that cuts the energy to the solenoid so a manual mechanical release is the only way to discharge (keyed, controlled key use and lots of signs around, and trouble alert on panel).
