Ni Lined Piping 1

Hi,

In my petrochemical plant, we have a loop reactor with Nickel Lined piping with Hydrogen contents in high pressure and temp.Service.

Any ideas how Nickle lining is carried out in such piping??

And how one can inspect the integrity of it over a long period of service say around 12 years?

Is this pipe internal clad or is it slip (loose) lined?
for clad pipe they bond the Ni to the steel either by rolling them together or by using explosives. Then they form and weld a pipe. The weld pass on the inside is with Ni filler, and on the outside with steel filler.

In your case the two big risks are:
1. hydrogen permeation through the liner and causing blistering or the structural part of the pipe. This maybe lead to extensive dis-bonding of the lining.
2. Pinhole leaks in the clad layer allowing corrosion of the structural pipe and possible disbonding of the liner.

It is a Ni clad pipe...I am exploring a sutiable inspection technique to establish the integrity of lining.

You may appreciate that Inspection from inside may not be possible due to difficult approach in the pipe that is 10" in size. Also i can't do it in running plant.
