I have the rotating disk of a rotary screen changer that has been damaged. The two faces of the disk have been damaged. The disk is made of a nitrided steel. If I have the plates lapped flat again. Would it be possible to have the disk nitrided again? Or can you only nitride a metal once?

Renitriding the steel should be possible in my opinion, provided wear and lapping have removed the original nitrided layer.

What is the base alloy? What type of nitriding process was used and what was the original case depth?

In my conversations with the origional manufacturer there opinion is I should by a new unit. That simply isn't an option.
I don't know what the origional material was, or the nitriding depth. I am also pretty sure as they want me to by a new one they are not about to tell me, as it is of no benifit to them.
Am I correct in guessing that nitriding generally only penetrates .015".
If I am only lapping the faces, would it matter in the re nitriding process that the whole thing was origionally nitrided?

Thanks for the good input. I know it is hard to give good answers with out all the facts.

If your damage is so slight that it can be removed by lapping, I think I would lap the surface, then use as-is.
