We are currently doing a switchgear replacement project in which we are removing existing 4.16kV switchgear lineup and replacing with new. The existing feeder cables will be re-terminated on the new switchgear.
The existing feeder cables are very old cables 40-50+ years and most of them do not have termination kits on them but are rather just taped and terminated on switchgear. When we re-terminate these existing cables on the new switchgear we plan on putting the proper termination kits on the cables. Because we are maneuvering cables and adding termination kits it has been suggested that these cables be tested prior to termination on the new switchgear.
Does anyone have an good recommendation for a non-destructive test for aged cables? My understanding is that a Hi-Pot test is a destructive test which could cause further damage to cables and some have recommended VLF testing instead.
