I have a used carbon steel pressure vessel that has no documentation of the type of material that was used to manufacture it. Destructive testing is not an option for identification. In this case, API 510 recommends using SA-283 C when analyzing the pressure retaining capabilities. Also, the vessel was manufactured in 1940. API states that when performing analysis of pressure vessel made before 1968, the allowable stresses of the year it was manufactured must be used. Do I simply use the allowable stresses of SA-283 C from 1940 when analyzing this vessel or are there other requiremetns.

If you are a stamp holder check with your AIA.

However the Local Jurisdiction has the final say. Suggest you check with them before you proceed with any work.

metengr is correct with the question. If you use it for a non pressure water tank or a sign post it is not an issue.
